The youngest brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad died in Damascus on Saturday, a Syrian news agency reported.Majd Hafez al-Assad died "after a long struggle with a severe illness," reported the Syrian Arab News Agency.Majd Hafez al-Assad is survived by his brothers Bashar and Maher, and a sister, Bushra.Assad's elder brother, Basil al-Assad was expected to become Syria's next president but was killed in a car accident in 1994.Bashar al-Assad became president in 2000, following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad.In 2008, a report was released accusing Bashar's brother-in-law of organizing a military coup to drive Assad out of power.
