Facebook page calls for beating Saudi women drivers

If we created a facebook page like this for Americans do you think they would allow it? I'm guessing Sheryl Sandberg would enact a double standard that we have come to expect.

A campaign has been launched on Facebook calling for men to beat Saudi women who drive their cars in a planned protest next month against the ultra-conservative kingdom's ban on women taking the wheel.
The call comes as activists are demanding the release of Manal al-Sharif, a Saudi woman who was jailed for defying the ban.
The page, titled "The Iqal Campaign: June 17 for preventing women from driving," refers to the Arabic name for the cord used to hold on the traditional headdress worn by many men in the Gulf, advocating the cord be used to hit women who dare to drive.
It has drawn over 6,000 "likes" on the popular social networking website.
Some on the page proposed distributing boxes of Iqals to youths and encouraging them use them to hit women who participate in the June 17 protest.
One joked about the price of Iqals going up due to men buying them before the protest. via news.yahoo.com

Facebook is an interesting organization. One of the key people in Facebook's current corporate structure is the COO who had previously worked for Google, Sheryl Sandberg. A recent feature story entitled Why Facebook Needs Sheryl Sandberg, May 12, 2011, gives a great deal of pertinent background.

Less than a week after Facebook removed a "cause" page calling for a "Third Intifada,"the social networking website and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg were hit with a lawsuit seeking more than $1 billion in damages, AFP reported Saturday.The suit, which AFP acquired from technology blog TechCrunch, was filed in the Washington DC Superior Court by Larry Klayman, a self-described "American citizen of Jewish origin" who is "active with matters concerning the security of Israel and all people." Klayman claimed that Facebook showed "negligence" bu not quickly responding the the calls to shut down the "Third Intifada" page. via jpost.com

Larry Klayman, a renowned American activist, former Justice Department prosecutor, former U.S. Senate candidate and book author, says he has sued both Facebook and founder Mark Zuckerberg for over $1 billion after the social networking giant failed to remove a page calling for a third intifada against Israel’s Jewish population swiftly enough.

The suit was filed yesterday in Washington by Klayman, himself of Jewish origin. The complaint is embedded below.
Klayman, who founded controversial law firm Judicial Watch as well as political advocacy group Freedom Watch, alleges that Zuckerberg and Facebook willfully kept a page calling for a third Palestinian intifada against Jews online to “further their revenues and the net worth” of the company. The page, which was removed on March 29 because, according to Facebook, it indeed made “direct calls for violence” in violation of its policies.

The removal of the page, which according to Klayman was “begrudgingly” ordered after increased pressure was exerted by himself, the Israeli government and organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, did not stop him from filing suit against the company.
The activist argues that damage has already been done, and that he fears for his life since he’s been “called a Zionist publicly by radical Palestinians and other such Arabic interests” and is “thus a target of this call to kill Jews” along with other prominent public figures.
The complaint alleges assault and negligence, gross negligence and recklessness on Facebook’s part. It reserves the right to be amended into a class action suit and prays for damages in excess of $1 billion, plus an award of attorneys fees and costs.

Can we call this the mother of all SLAPP suits? Heh.

Twitterati Morons Blame Islamic Deathfest on Qur'an Burning Pastor

The brain-dead are up in arms again – and we’re not talking about Qur’an burning pastor Terry Jones:
The kind of simple-minded, ‘me-too’ mentality that feels the need to post on Twitter’s ‘trending topics’ meme-of-the-moment timelines has gleefully rounded on Terry Jones, the US Pastor, who leads the fundamentalist Dove World Outreach Center in Florida – who finally delivered on his promise to publicly burn a Qur’an in protest at the undeniable fact that:

“…….parts of the Koran, if taken literally, do lead to violence and terrorist activities, do promote racism or prejudice against minorities, against Christians, against women,” he said shortly after the Koran burning.

Using Jones’ protest as their cue – and incensed by the usual whipping-up of violent fervour by Islamic clerics, Muslims in Afghanistan went on the rampage in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. A total of fourteen people were killed, including some of the protesters themselves, three UN workers and four Nepalese guards.

Google 2.4% Rate Shows How $60 Billion Lost to Tax Loopholes

Google Inc. cut its taxes by $3.1 billion in the last three years using a technique that moves most of its foreign profits through Ireland and the Netherlands to Bermuda. 

Google’s income shifting -- involving strategies known to lawyers as the “Double Irish” and the “Dutch Sandwich” -- helped reduce its overseas tax rate to 2.4 percent, the lowest of the top five U.S. technology companies by market capitalization, according to regulatory filings in six countries. 

“It’s remarkable that Google’s effective rate is that low,” said Martin A. Sullivan, a tax economist who formerly worked for the U.S. Treasury Department. “We know this company operates throughout the world mostly in high-tax countries where the average corporate rate is well over 20 percent.” 

The U.S. corporate income-tax rate is 35 percent. In the U.K., Google’s second-biggest market by revenue, it’s 28 percent.

Google, the owner of the world’s most popular search engine, uses a strategy that has gained favor among such companies as Facebook Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The method takes advantage of Irish tax law to legally shuttle profits into and out of subsidiaries there, largely escaping the country’s 12.5 percent income tax. The earnings wind up in island havens that levy no corporate income taxes at all. Companies that use the Double Irish arrangement avoid taxes at home and abroad as the U.S. government struggles to close a projected $1.4 trillion budget gap and European Union countries face a collective projected deficit of 868 billion euros.

The Dublin subsidiary, which employs almost 2,000 people and sells advertising across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, has more than tripled its workforce since 2006 and is credited with almost 90 percent of Google’s overseas sales, which totaled $12.5 billion in 2008.

Despite claims to the contrary, it’s no coincidence that Facebook chief Zuckerberg announced last week–to much fanfare on Oprah–that he was donating $100 million to the City of Newark schools.  The movie about how he created Facebook as a Harvard undergrad is an entirely negative, unsympathetic portrayal of the computer code writer, and he felt the need to do something to answer the hate it is bound to create for him.  Disregard reviews that say you’ll want to egg his house, then hug him afterward and help him clean it up.  You definitely won’t want to hug him or help him clean anything. If even a fraction of it is true, the guy’s a major scumbag. But that’s the key. Just how much of it is, indeed true?

As the number of Facebook members signed up for the “Boycott Target Until They Cease Funding Anti-Gay Politics” page neared 78,000 in recent days, Facebook personnel locked down portions of the page — banning new discussion threads, preventing members from posting videos and standard Web links to other sites and barring the page’s administrator from sending updates to those who signed up for the boycott. “It slices the vocal cords,” complained Jeffrey Henson, who ran the Facebook page, calling for a boycott of Target over its $150,000 donation to a group supporting a candidate some view as hostile to the gay community, Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. “The page is now outraged” over the website’s action, Henson added. Participants in the boycotts complain Facebook’s actions have created an uneven playing field in which ad hoc citizens’ groups face hurdles to online organizing — obstacles that corporations using social media have little trouble surmounting. “Facebook is interfering with the function of a page dedicated to individuals organizing in response to corporate action to which they object,” said Nicholas Lefevre, a promoter of the Target boycott. “With the limited avenues for such expression and organization and the importance of the Internet to that ability, anything that threatens that expression is dangerous.” Another Facebook page “liked” by even more people — a boycott of petroleum giant BP that attracted more than 847,000 fans — was also hit by a similar clampdown last week. Those who use the BP page to communicate about the gulf spill reacted angrily. “It all smells fishier than the gulf to me,” said one comment on the page from a member called “Triple Bottomline.” Organizers of the Target and BP boycotts quickly started new pages, but their followers have been slow to locate and join the new pages. By Friday, only 1,450 members had signed up for the new page from BP boycott organizer Lee Perkins and 2,507 had signed up for a new Target boycott page. In response to a query from POLITICO, Facebook said the earlier pages were restricted because they ran afoul of the social media site’s terms of service, limiting so-called pages to individuals and entities that have some real structure in the bricks-and-mortar world.

We said that facebook's policy of allowing hate speech was hypocrisy to begin with... but criticism of their paycheck is the kind of hate that facebook doesn't tolerate. The government needs to get involved, but frankly I don't trust Obama either.

Etc. Stop comparing unlike ideas. It might work when you are angry and screaming abuse, but it doesn't work when people think about it. We will not allow hate speech in the name of tolerance. We might allow debate on what is hate speech, but we will not tolerate an administration deciding those factors for over 100 million. Get me facebook and twitter? We are losing a Language War because we have submitted ourselves to elitists who decide what is the same.

I'm all fine withe the right wing profit capitalism kind of stuff, but I have seen two promising things this year that broke my heart. One was the 2007 Mets. The other facebook. I got thrown off for the same reasons as Scoble... I know that it was a lie and I got kicked off for etiquette. The administration knew that etiquite was a slippery slope... so they threw information abuse at me. Now Scoble has made our contact information just as arbitrary. Regardless facebook is a government. And any government that runs on "DISCRETION" like the facebook "Terms" is bull dinky. The appeals system is unconstitutional... but being that facebook doesn't have one it is almost pointless to say that. I want to stand accountable for my actions. ZuckerTurd and Scoble showed me that it is a very elitist party. Can you believe that Scoble sent out an antiwar message from his protest facebook group? I don't care where you stand on the political spectrum... Iraq has nothing to do with Scoble getting special privileges.
