Some scholars say early versions of the Bible featured Asherah, a powerful fertility goddess who may have been God's wife. Research by Francesca Stavrakopoulou, a senior lecturer in the department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter, unearthed clues to her identity, but good luck finding mention of her in the Bible. If Stavrakopoulou is right, heavy-handed male editors of the text all but removed her from the sacred book.
What remains of God's purported other half are clues in ancient texts, amulets and figurines unearthed primarily in an ancient Canaanite coastal city, now in modern-day Syria. Inscriptions on pottery found in the Sinai desert also show Yahweh and Asherah were worshipped as a pair, and a passage in the Book of Kings mentions the goddess as being housed in the temple of Yahweh.
J. Edward Wright, president of The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and The Albright Institute for Archaeological Research, backs Stavrakopoulou's findings, saying several Hebrew inscriptions mention “Yahweh and his Asherah." He adds Asherah was not entirely edited out of the Bible by its male editors.
"Traces of her remain, and based on those traces... we can reconstruct her role in the religions of the Southern Levant," he told Discovery News.
...Aaron Brody, director of the Bade Museum and an associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion, says the ancient Israelites were polytheists, with only a “small majority” worshipping God alone. He says it was the exiling of an elite community within Judea and the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 586 B.C that lead to a more "universal vision of strict monotheism."

Well, as for Biblical references, we do have these

But the Torah has this:
לֹא-תִטַּע לְךָ אֲשֵׁרָה, כָּל-עֵץ:  אֵצֶל, מִזְבַּח יְ וָה אֱלֹהֶ-יךָ
Thou shalt not plant thee an Asherah of any kind of tree beside the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee

Seems to me Asherah is very prominent and well-known in  the Bible.  So what's the big deal?  Does one have to possess weird theories to be famous?

Violent Ancient Feminism Confronting the Hebrew

I was reading some interesting things about Ba'al. the Assyrian god was El... who is the creator god that some people believe Judaism turned into Elohim. El's wife was Asherah. This character called Ba'al kept the god El in check by castrating him. These religions were deeply lunar, matriarchal and violent. Kind of a mother goddess Gloria Steinem religion before contemporary feminism. El is apparently some kind of Bull who is castrated. Ba'al acts within the control of Asherah who is a woman. Kind of like Hilary Clinton but worse.

Asherah: The Goddess of the Sea and wife of El. An important council to El with a minor association to fertility.

Ba'al was apparently a war god. the bible does not clarify this. he is not the big cheese. kind of funny that the Hebrew word for "Master" comes from Ba'al. like Ba'al Shem Tov.... meaning "Master of the Good Word"

but it is interesting to me that the creator god gets castrated by the "Master". it would seem that women had a lot of power in this theology.

Affirmative Action Strikes Again

60% of college grads and grad school programs like law degrees are occupied by women. I don't have a problem with this, but it is a little unfair to ask for affirmative action. We idolize Asia's strong educational ethos, but seem to fear Asia's strong cultural patriarchal view of the family. strong traditional Jewish values were patriarchal too. I'm not saying that we should turn the world upside down for anyone, but the gender revolution and our school's ability to create innovators seem to be running parallel. women have strengths. their emotional quotient gets work in the modern world, why are we still doing this to men? Now feminist accusations that the stimulus discriminated against women because its jobs would go mostly to men. they have no sympathy with the fact that men were victims of most of the lost jobs because the majority of manufacturing and construction jobs are men's jobs. The segments of our economy dominated by women: social services, education, health, childcare and welfare have actually gained jobs during this recession. The feminists demanded half the stimulus jobs be given to women. The feminists conspired to achieve this by pushing the stimulus funds into jobs where women predominate and by moving at least one third of the spending in manufacturing and construction industries to training women for men's jobs.

I've read the book by David copp and Susan Wendell. they aren't objective stats at all. did you read the post feminist article in the NYTimes last month. pretty much throws all those lies out. most of the stats that claim the mental distress from porn is based on the idea that it causes pain in both genders. that is a lie. it is relaxing to many. it causes a loss of status for women... but soap operas do the same to men. the final finding from those Copp/Wendell studies were based on levels of aggression towards women. it also claims that women also feel aggressive to other women from watching porn. but what it fails to mention is the cause of the female aggression is different then the cause of male. men might be more likely to be dominant after watching a display of this... but the aggression that women feel is their vanity busted. it is true that viewing domination causes the audience to be dominant, but it is also true that to not be appreciated for your traits causes feelings of anger. should I not appreciate a women's beauty? because of this androgyny causes negative violence. masculine domination on the other hand can be liberating for heterosexuals

Society simply can not address all the classifications of gender and sexuality. by simply identifying a character as straight or gay it limits the spectrum of psychological profiles. this is why our government should not create social contracts merely on who we like... but our civilization needs to create structures that reflect our architecture.

there is less an issue of gender orientation and more a dynamic of if a person is an objectifier or an objectified. is a person dominant or receiving. does a person get off on being shot at or not? being that this world is virtual... it doesn't even work because it is a waste... it is a sacrifice... a martyrdom of time we all choose. we are all there to be submissive to the machine. in life there is an architecture to female submission in sexuality. babies can be made. If I agree to get shot at on xbox with labor and pain do I get the joy of creating other lives?

this assumes that it is just a game. I think politics, sex and religion have no place in the virtual world exactly because they do. it is an example of how transparency must be limited. we are all there to be submissive to the machine and therefor our hidden agendas might have symbolic implications that destroy the community. We are all in labor with each other for the system which is our child.


There is a sexual dynamic to virtual hunting and this is why it might be threatening to bring in identity into this. certainly the industry opened themselves up to something when they created Tomb Raider and Street Fighter. now the question is what does a gay character do to a game when the very game is a play at submission. I'm certain there are no coded answers to these questions. we invite sexuality into the sphere. the virtual vixens are in fact very "lesbian" esque... and of course they also create a male hetero fetish. They are muscular and they are aggressive... the industry created this out of it's own desire to sell games. but in fact it is popular because it appeals to a desire for men to submit. to role play something that they can't in life.


it is a matter of health to allow a certain level of libidinal desire that might be damaging to oneself. we as human beings might even be more healthy because we experiment with this other side. this duality. I'm not sure this should be coded as homosexual or transgender. if this element is dangerous to the game then it should not be an option.

the entire market for this is because the natural male instinct for hunting and fighting is taken away from society. people are repressed. if they invite the natural fetish into the sphere... then it is their fault. The irony of virtual combat is that it involves submission... and perhaps all combat is submissive to a larger machine. Is it no wonder that sexuality and the military must be so contained. A person who invites the system out of libidinal desire has no place because there is no boundary. Certainly a great fighter might enjoy it, but how dangerous to have such a zealous warrior. These desires need to be contained and yet allowed in it's place.

Your article failed to make mention of Joseph Campbell's analysis of pre-Patriarchal religions in the Mid-East and surrounding areas. Such violent cultures of the Bull-Worship of Anatolia and the Serpent religions of Kush Arabia that influenced the later interpretation of the Hellenic character of Medusa were in fact Matriarchal religions that had powerful women. Kush culture had dominant Queens and female leaders and warriors. If you look at the later evolution of Islam (with it's Abrahamic Patriarchal influences), you begin to understand that the vast history of women in power is one of conflict, alienation, devastation, abuse and tyranny. It is hard for the politically correct crowd to swallow... but the pre-Patriarchal cultures were not nice to live in. We might today have such bias as to think that Islam is worse then these serpent religions, but we would be ignorant if we thought this.
