I'm not going to respect you because of any cultural product or fashion. I will respect you because of your non absolute values and loyalties. I like wearing Black Latex, but I'm not going to scorn people who don't walk around with a full body condom. You’re not a punk because you sew patches on your clothes with dental floss. I dated a girl in summer camp in 1989 who was a huge Def Leppard fan and the next year she was into the Grateful Dead and I think she was a poser. I fight against absolutists and fashion fascists like some precocious hippies and some pretentious Goths.
I just got through watching the “Devil wears Prada”... I found myself hating it and liking it at the same time. I got the whole critique of the fashion industry (I worked in it so it seemed familiar). I was annoyed because it seemed also to glamorize it. I really like the performance of the actors (Meryl Streep , Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt... Anne Hathaway or was that Julia Roberts?) It was definitely better then say “Little Black Book”, "Sex in the City" or “Coyote Ugly” or a.k.a. the same genre of girl urban success in ratio to intimate relationships. I felt the film was done well, but I find this genre of film making to be an ugly little paradox. I hate the way these films always have the damn Sprint Ring tone in them… (how much does Sprint pay for this anyway?) It just seems to be another excuse to market to the “Sex in the City“ Crowd …a completely accepting crowd of any type of moral statement as long as it gives vanity to their own meaningless life. Again, that is not to say that the “Devil” is a bad film. Nor am I saying that “Sex in the City” is a bad show either… and I even thought the writing in the show “Friends” is pretty good… There is just something annoying and bourgeois about these things. Some people would say I’m just bitter because the materialistic life full of lovers that usually never work out is something I would never experience… Probably true. And certainly I am tired of politically correct films that look like an industrial revolution Dickens story full of poor people. I think the reason “Little Miss Sunshine” was such a great movie was not that it was some kind of feminist anti fashion statement… certainly the writers were never critical of the grandfather who liked his porn… the beauty of “Little Miss Sunshine” was that it presented the drama of real average overeducated poor Americans. While the “Devil” was well done… I would like to see more stuff that seems like real people… not a story about some guilt ridden P.C. girl in the fashion industry. I’m enthusiastic about other peoples dreams, but I think these films are pornographic. Am I the only one who feels this way?
