hermaphrodites according to joseph campbell was not the son on Hermes. He was the son of Zeus but not Hera his wife. I'm pretty sure about this part... but I did read this six years ago.
at any rate Zeus and Hera had a fight over who enjoyed sex better. men or women? so Zeus sent his son to find out the answer. Hermaphroditus spent (I believe) seven years as a man and seven years as a woman (could be wrong about the number but that is kind of irrelevant). After the time he experienced life as both a man and woman he was summoned back to mount Olympus. Zeus and Hera asked who had better sex? Hermaphroditus said the sex was better as a woman. Zeus laughed hysterically... because he has won the argument with his wife. Hera was so pissed she blinded Hermaphroditus. Zeus took pity on him and gave him the gift of knowledge... but he was from that point on unable to see with his eyes.
